An excerpt of an interview with Florence Chan from Beijing News.com 23 Oct 2004

Regarding Leslie - His Character Was Such He Could Never Come To A Complete Standstill
BN: Could you discuss with us what Leslie Cheung was like in your eyes? We believe there were many amusing anecdotes.
FC: Actually I love his character. He was very straight which was his good point but this characteristic of his became a disadvantage when he was with strangers because the media would falsify his comments and remarks with their twisted media reporting. Therefore later all media interviews had to go through me first and I was always by his side at all press conferences to ';help'; him out. In those days the term ';manager'; never existed. Due to my relationship with Leslie Cheung, the media began to call me ';Leslie Cheung';s manager';. The very first person to address me in this manner at that time was Ming Pao Publication';s Lee Jeun Yan. Leslie Cheung and I got on very well together. He confided in me in everything. We were best of friends. In the end we were like brother and sister.
BN: According to Leslie Cheung, his retirement from singing in 1989 was due mainly to people making a comparison between Alan Tam and himself?
FC: That';s correct but this was an unavoidable issue. At that time Alan Tam was already very popular and Leslie was catching up on his popularity in a very intense manner. They themselves did not want this kind of comparison. However at that time their respective fans were at loggerheads with each other just like water and fire. During that period fans of Alan Tam frequently plastered Leslie';s front door with curses written on slips of paper. They also placed stuffs like joss-sticks, candles and incense papers on his front porch. Leslie felt his life was being threatened. There was a strong sense of insecurity for him so he started to have thoughts of retirement.
Actually at that time I felt that even if he were to retire, it would only be for a couple of years because I knew him too well. His character was such that he could never come to a complete standstill. He loved his work and he enjoyed singing. If he was 60 or 70 years old, then it would be alright for him to retire but at that time he was much too young. To settle down quietly would be an impossibility. When we were preparing for the world tour concert in 1989, Leslie requested me to write ';retirement from the entertainment world';. However I took it upon myself to
alter it to ';retirement from the pop scene'; instead.
BN: How was it later at the height of his movie career, he decided to return to singing?
FC: Actually it was his own wish to return to singing but he was embarrassed to tell me about it. Anyway, he finally came looking for me; hoping that I would help him. I felt there wasn';t a need to have a reason for his comeback to singing as there were sponsors as well as his fans. If he could not resist making a comeback, by all means do so. Leslie
matured a lot after his comeback. I felt he was a happier person following his return to singing.
BN: In the past many superstars whom you have managed had left us such as Leslie Cheung and .....do you often think of him?
FC: (A long silence....eyes turning red)..Right now I don';t know what to say...(silence). I have known Leslie.....he was really like a younger brother to me. It was extremely.....extremely heartbreaking....(silence). Let';s not bring this up again........
