    芭芭拉清亮热情的嗓音和尼尔郁黯深沉的嗓音形成了鲜明的对比。让一位流行歌星去演唱古典艺术歌曲，恐怕是很难办到的事，然而芭芭拉·史翠珊却能实现这奇迹。这位1942年出生的犹太女歌星有著得天独厚的优美歌喉，自幼就显示了喜剧表演才能和优异的乐感。1960年她参加了纽约格林威治村的一次夜总会歌唱比赛夺得了冠军，次年首次在电视节目中露面，从此开始了她的演唱生涯。她善唱、舞、善演，具有多方面的才能，很快就引起人们的注意．1963年，她录制了第一张专辑唱片，紧接着又推出两张更畅销的唱片，显示了她掌握各种风格的技艺和惊人的声乐技巧，几十年来她一直称于欧美流行乐坛，史翠珊特别擅长演唱那些激情洋溢的抒情歌曲，她的歌曲中蕴涵着火一般的热情和诗一样的温馨。60年代中期，她曾三次获格兰美最佳流行女歌手奖，1987年又一次获得该奖。1967年在纽约中央公园的音乐会吸引了13万5千观众。史翠珊在电影方面也有惊人的成绩。  1968年因主演《俏皮姑娘》而获得奥斯卡最佳女主角奖。1969年又在《哈罗，多莉！》中担任女主角，以善唱善演的魅力征服了观众。  1976年，她主演的影片《明星的诞生》中，有一首她自己作曲并亲自演唱的歌曲《爱情万年青(Ever  Green)》，夺得奥斯卡最佳电影歌曲奖。在影坛的辉煌胜利，激励了她的决心，她开始创办并经营了自己的制片公司，多次出任导演。1983年她自编、自制片、自导、自演、自唱的影片《燕特尔》上映，开创了她事业的新高度。
