God';s Light

The September 1997 night sky was unleashing its fury on Wisconsin as I looked across Lake Michigan.  I anxiously took up position on shore, setting a 300-millimeter lens on top of my tripod, awaiting the advancing tempest.  I maintained my pre-visualized composition, never changing the narrow aim of the camera.  Planning, preparation, and patience had provided good odds of capturing the moment.  I took the first 30-second time exposure as lighting bolts began striking closer.  I was as charged as the air about me!  Bingo!  I believe, recording this magnificent moment was God';s will.  We named it "God';s Light."

God  Beams

Shining brighter than a spotlight at a rock concert, beams of light I like to call "God Beams" spotlight the Ludington lighthouse. I prefer nature';s light shows to any manmade ones.

The  Moon
On an August evening, at Big Point Sable Lighthouse, I faced a momentary dilemma. While shooting a dramatic sunset over Lake Michigan, I looked to the East to see if the sky was "painting" the lighthouse with its brilliant color. As I turned, what caught my eye was not the lighthouse bathed in pink, but the moon rising over a gorgeously "painted" dune just north of the lighthouse. The light was splendid and short-lived. I knew there was not time to shoot all three pictures. I was vacillating when my decisive wife declared "Shoot the moon!" Good call, Debbie.

Dune  Grass

The 45-minute hike to Big Sable Lighthouse is, for me, like going hunting. My senses soar as I walk the Lake Michigan shoreline and adjacent dunes. My mind is moving through a process of seeing, designing, and evaluating potential pictures. Some days it seems I will never see a good picture no matter how hard I am trying. On one of those days, I came upon this dune grass with Big Sable Lighthouse towering in the background. I knew immediately I was in the presence of a good picture.

Swan

Few creatures in nature stand out like mute swans. This proud bird was finding winter refuge in some open water on the Pere Marquette River. Mute swans have become a common sight in northern Michigan but one that continues to rivet my attention.

Proud as a peacock, a rooster parades about its pen an hour after crowing in another summer day on a small family farm north of Custer.

Red  Wave

On an autumn evening at Ludington beach, I watched the waves take turns running toward and breaking upon the shoreline. While the light was changing, creating radically different photographs from minute to minute, the camera';s view remained locked in place. The fickle light sometimes becomes dramatically more intense, and other times it just seems to fizzle. Staying, and watching, is the only way to know what the quality of light will be.

Homeward

It was the first day of the 1999 sailing season for the carferry Badger. Providing a colorful sunset, it was as if nature was saluting the grand ship on her return to Ludington harbor.

Hawk

I came upon this scene while hiking along Hamlin Lake at Ludington State Park. Staying as quiet as possible, not to appear threatening to the fearles hawk, I slowly set up my camera and tripod. The hawk accepted my presence and began the grisly process of eating its prey. The fur from the squirrel';s beautiful tail fluttered in the wind. As is often nature';s way, the scene was a visual and emotional paradox; so deadly, yet so beautiful. I went away saddened and exhilarated, focusing on the beauty and knowledge that what I had just witnessed was natural and necessary.

Drift  Wood

Like nature';s version of a Calder sculpture, a sand-blasted and sun-faded tree trunk juts forth from Silver Lake sand dunes. It is amazing how much the dunes shift with the wind. Changing light also adds new discovery to each visit. I often wonder about the scenes I am missing on the days I am not there.

Kiss  Birds

Sunrise on the Pere Marquette River-designated by Congress a National and Scenic River-reveals a scene to match the designation. The affectionate herons did not appear to notice my presence. I remained as motionless as possible while frequently shooting as their positions and the light constantly changed.
